What is beauty?

Beauty has taken alot of different forms. It is really hard to get one good definition of Beauty. According to http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/beauty, Beauty is "the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manisfestations..." Why does it seem that ultra skinny people pleasure others? You see them on the front of magazines and all over the television. Who decided that was beautiful? Teens all across the globe are looking up to girls that are a size 0. "The unnatural thickness is a terrible message to send out. The people watching the fashion shows are young, impressionable women," van der Wal told USA Today. USA Today wrote a story called Do Thin Models Warp Girls' Body Image, the answer is yes. USA Today talks about how girls as young as 1st graders look up to these women. There was a studied conducted by Murnen stating that only 18% of girls "reject" the image of "beauty." They are also the ones who have the highest self esteem. I personally think that girls need to look up to women who have curves and thickness. Being a size 2 or 4 is nice, but it's just as nice as being a 8 or 10. Sure guys might look at you different, but it shouldn't matter to you. Is it really beautiful to have bones sticking out? I think beauty comes from within, if you have curves flaunt it. Beauty isn't about being a stick figure, it's about being comfortable in your own skin :)

  1. Good job on this Carly! I totally agree with a lot of stuff in this blog. Like the fact that being skinny is viewed as the best way to be beautiful. The USA Today story really says how girls are getting eating disorders just to be "beautiful". I think the super skinny models look kinda gross. :)

  2. I like how you defined the term first. You then complicate the definition for your own purposes, which is a strong rhetorical move. The addition of the picture powerfully impacts the emotions the reader brings to the text. You will want to introduce the article before quoting from it, so switch the order of these two sentences: "The unnatural thickness is a terrible message to send out. The people watching the fashion shows are young, impressionable women," van der Wal told USA Today. USA Today wrote a story called Do Thin Models Warp Girls' Body Image, the answer is yes.

Why does society consider a 0 beautiful when 50 years ago a size 8 or 10 was ideal? Marylin Monroe was a 12, and no one called her "fat"!

  3. You might check out the new book Hungry by Crystal Renn. It's the true story of Crystal's experience as a model and trying to diet down to a size zero. The book is easy to read and includes lots of good statistics and facts.
Here is an interview with Renn:
